Frequently Asked Questions

Match the insulation to how much you move, not just to the temperature. Uninsulated and 400G boots suit early season and any hunt where you are walking, since an over-insulated boot leaves your feet damp and then cold. Stand hunting in cold weather calls for 800G to 1000G, and 2000G models like the LaCrosse Cold Snap II are for sitting still in serious cold.

Rubber is the choice for wet ground and for whitetail hunting, because it sheds water and mud completely and holds less scent than leather. Leather breathes better and supports the foot more over long miles, which makes it the better upland and mountain boot. Many hunters keep both and pick by the season rather than trying to make one boot do everything.

Snake boots use a tall shaft lined with bite-resistant material that wraps the lower leg, the area most exposed when you step near a snake. Height is the key spec, which is why most run 16 to 17 inches. They reduce risk substantially but are not a guarantee, so they supplement watching where you step rather than replacing it.

Sixteen to seventeen inches is the standard for men's snake boots and covers the calf where most bites land. Chippewa's women's Sunjo and Cottonwood run 15 inches, which is proportionate on a shorter leg. If a boot that tall sounds slow to deal with, look for a side or rear zip model, which several of these carry.

Nearly all of them are, which is standard for the category. Rubber boots are waterproof by construction, and the leather models use waterproof membranes, with GORE-TEX on Rocky's BearClaw and Outback. The individual product page states the waterproofing on each model.

Yes. Chippewa's Sunjo and Cottonwood are 15-inch women's snake boots, and the broader women's hunt selection covers rubber and insulated models as well. This page shows the full range across men's and women's, so filter or use the women's hunt collection if you want to narrow it down.
