Frequently Asked Questions

Continuous coverage. A one-piece garment has no gap at the waist where sparks, debris or a flash can reach skin when you bend or reach, which is why welders and plant workers favor them. Separates are cooler and let you swap layers across the seasons. Both work if they carry the ratings your site requires.

The Bizflame, Iona, Bizweld and DuraDuck Flame lines are flame resistant, and each states its certification on the product page. The hi-vis winter coveralls are a separate line built for visibility and warmth. On an FR site, buy the garments that state the certification your site names. See our Portwest flame resistant clothing range.

It is built to resist spatter and sparks as well as flame, with taped seams and closures that do not trap molten metal. Welding produces a steady shower of hot particles rather than a single flash, so fabric weight and construction matter. Pair it with leather boots built for the same hazard. See our welding boots range.

The fabric is built to dissipate static charge rather than let it build up and discharge as a spark. That matters in flammable atmospheres such as fuel handling, refineries and some chemical plants, where a static spark can be an ignition source. It is a separate property from flame resistance, so check for both where your site requires them.

Loose enough to reach overhead and squat without the garment pulling tight across the back or riding up at the ankles. Torso length is the measurement that most often goes wrong, which is why tall sizes exist. A little room also helps FR garments protect, because an air gap between fabric and skin adds insulation.

Leg and torso coverage with free arms, so you can wear them over any shirt or under any jacket. Quilt-lined FR bibs are a common winter layer on outdoor oil, gas and utility work, where warmth and flame resistance are both required. See our oil and gas work boots range to match your footwear.

Short dirty jobs where contamination is the hazard rather than heat or flame: painting, insulation, cleanup and inspections. They keep dust, fibers and splashes off your clothes and get thrown away afterwards. Where flame resistance is required, use a rated FR coverall instead.

Inside out, without bleach, fabric softener or starch, which can coat the fibers or add fuel. Oil-soaked garments should be laundered promptly, since contamination can burn even when the fabric does not. Browse the full Portwest range.
